There are a lot of video games on the PSP, and with that an ample amount of role-playing games (RPG) for it as well. But, if you are viewing this article, then you are looking for the best RPGs for the PSP, and with that said we'll cover some of the top ones that you shouldn't miss!

Role-playing games are my sweet vice, I have this huge urge to play them all, even the ones that are not so great (at least to a point). But, I do recognize RPGs that are the creme of the crop, the ones that are several steps above their competition in design, enjoyment, characters, and story. This article is entirely dedicated to bringing you the best of the best, the games that you shouldn't miss out on, especially if you enjoy a rock solid RPG experience.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy

This game is fantastic, even if you don't usually play regular Final Fantasy games! It has an incredible and deep story that keeps you sucked in, likable and complex heroes, and enjoyable and addictive combat.

Everything from the production design to the cutscenes are top-notch, so you are definitely getting a great bang for the buck here. I highly do recommend this one, you'll enjoy it from beginning to end.

"The way their personal stories weave in and out of each other - and set the stage for the events in Final Fantasy VII - makes Crisis Core not just the finest role-playing experience available on the PSP, but also one of the best RPGs in years." - GameSpot

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3

It has a great story, player-friendly tweaks, addictive customization features, and a great presentation. This one is a lot of fun to play, with multiple methods of beating it, and with that said it means there is also a lot of replay value to be had with this title.

With all of the tweaks in the game, it's especially well suited for newcomers, so don't think you'll be biting off more than you can chew as with the other Persona titles on the market. This is a superb introduction to the Persona universe and I highly recommend checking this one out.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions
Amazon Price: $7.50
List Price: $9.99

FF Tactics: War of Lions

Imagine a deep and great story with very likable characters, and mixed with that is a superb tactical combat system with tremendous customization and replayability. All of that is all tightly wrapped inside a role-playing framework.

This is one of those games that people seem to dump a lot of hours into, and it's not because they are forced to for the sake of beating the game, it's because the replay value is so high and it's fun to do so. I've shaped so many different characters in this one, and even after all of this time I'm still having that strong pull to play this again for the 400th time.

I highly recommend this one, especially if you like a healthy amount of tactics in your role-playing games, and especially if you want a game that you can pick up over and over again.

Jeanne d'Arc

I'll be honest, this one actually flew under my radar for a while there, until I heard it mentioned online as a great tactical role-playing game for the PSP. I'm glad I picked this one up, and I recommend this one for anyone that likes RPGs in general, and especially for those that liked Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions. The cutscenes are enjoyable to watch, a lovable cast, and it boasts a great story as well.

The story of this is great, and it basically runs some parallels to the real story of Jeanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc) in real history, although this adaptation is more fantasy based, meaning plenty of magic, creatures, and more are in the game.

Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness
Amazon Price: $16.55
List Price: $29.99
Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days
Amazon Price: $16.61
List Price: $29.99

Disgaea

I'm going to cheat with this one, even though this list is about the top 5, I'm going to combine this into Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness and Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days. Why? Because these are one of those rare games that have a great story, very likeable characters, a tremendous amount of customization, and as well as so much replay value that it's pretty ridiculous. I mean seriously, you can spend hours customizing your characters with all sorts of things, and that itself is pretty enjoyable.

This is honestly one of those games that you'll get about 100 times the bang for your buck, in other words for the little amount of money that you spend on it, you'll get much more than that in entertainment value.
