How to Block Websites with Firefox

By

Sometimes when you stroll to a website, you stumble on a website that may see something that isn't decent, or it could even potentially contain a virus. You can block websites with Firefox pretty easily with an extension called "BlockSite" that is located on the Firefox Add-ons area on the Mozilla website.

Aside from it's functionality, I've really liked how simple it is to use. It's not cluttered with useless information or data, and it's very straight-forward, which allows people who are not even internet savvy to understand what's going on. If you are looking for something to block website(s), I highly recommend checking this one out.

There are multiple reasons why you may find it handy to block a website, such as:

  • Known viruses on the website
  • Indecent material, such as pictures or writing
  • Keeping underage minors from viewing questionable websites

Installing BlockSite

You can either go to the actual page with this add-on and download and install from there (previously linked above), or you can follow this short guide below.

Step 1: Open Firefox, click "Tools" and then click "Add-ons".

Step 2: Click "Get Add-ons" and then select "Browse All Add-ons".

Step 3: Type the words "BlockSite" in the search bar, then press enter.

Step 4: Click the "Add to Firefox" button. It should then load, then click the install button. Firefox may want to restart after this, if so let it.

Preparing BlockSite

Step 5: Go to "Tools" and click "Add-ons". Find the BlockSite "preferences" button. Check to see if the "Blacklist" button is ticked, as well as "Enable Link Removal", "Enable Warning Messages", and "Enable BlockSite" are also ticked.

Step 6: If you want to enable authentication so people can't delete your block list, check the "Enable Authentication" option, then enter a password.

Using BlockSite

Step 7: Click the "Add" button and enter the URL of the site that you want to block, click ok. If you want to add more websites to this list, just repeat this. If you want to delete the list, click the "Clear" option.

Step 8: Once you have added all the websites that you want to block, click "Ok", and then restart Firefox.
