Bring Back Firefly: The Browncoat Rebellion

By Origin

Did you know that even though Firefly only ran on television for a single year until it was eventually canceled, yet due to the large fanbase it spawned a big screen movie? It's true! It was taken off the air and only eleven of the fourteen produced episodes were aired. The movie is called Serenity, and it takes place a little while after the series ended. Due to the show's popularity and large following it also spawned books, comics, and roleplaying games.

What's Firefly About?

The series takes place in the year 2517, after humans arrive to a new star system. This star system is huge, with dozens of planets and hundreds of moons. The show follows the renegade crew of the Serenity, a Firefly-class ship, which is also why the show is called Firefly, and the movie is called Serenity.

Joss Whedon pitched the show as "nine people looking into the blackness of space and seeing nine different things".

The concept of the show is that it follows the people from the losing side of a civil war (the browncoats), and they now make a legal and sometimes illegal living doing odd jobs as they drift from planet to planet. The winning side of the civil war was the Alliance, which is made up of the only two surviving superpowers, the United States and China. You'll notice throughout the show that they speak both English and Chinese, so it gives you a hint how those cultures mixed together over time.

Joss Whedon mentions, "nothing will change in the future, technology will advance, but we wil still have the same political, moral, and ethical problems as today".

My Thoughts

When I first watched Firefly on television, I saw it out of order due to it being accidentally being shown that way on the network, which is also widely believed the reason why the show's viewership wasn't the best, because it was out of whack a lot of the time, and things didn't line-up correctly.

When I first watched it I liked the space and cowboy hybrid theme, which was unique and enjoyable to watch, but I didn't get hooked quiet yet. I got hooked on the television series when I borrowed a friend's Firefly DVD's and sat down to watch them. Needless to say, I watched all of them in a single day (no, I'm not joking). The cast was superb, the story was excellent, and the show had a lot of humor and wit.

It is strongly believed among the viewership that this will be another "1960's Star Trek" that will spawn future sequels at a later date, at some near distant point in the future. It was my hope that eventually they would at least do some two hour Straight-to-DVD sequels, but that hasn't happened yet. Fortunately, they have made some books, a roleplaying game (pen and paper), comic books, as well as some additional items.

Please note, I didn't list every single product on this page (just too many of them!). If you are viewing the results of one of the products on the right, look at Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought section on Amazon and you'll see more Firefly items!

Media Gossip

Did you know that by September 2005, its DVD release had sold approximately 500,000 copies and was also one of the top movers at Amazon.com for months? It's true! A part of this is because the series has a large following, which is continuing to grow to this day.

Serenity Roleplaying Game

This is probably the closest thing you'll ever get to living the experience, just get a couple friends over and give this game a whirl. It has received largely positive reviews (you can even verify from the reviews on Amazon) which is a definite plus! Usually if a roleplaying game only does moderately well, it will only have 1-2 additional books, but this one is still flying quite high with several resource books and adventure books.

I do recommend that if you get this to get the Serenity RolePlaying Game, The Big Damn Heroes Handbook, and the Game Master's Screen if you want to have an easier time running the game. Even if your not a roleplayer, these books would greatly compliment your Firefly collection!

I'm a Firefly fan, too. But I don't really hope for another series. It worked as well as it did because of a serendipitous synergy between the ensemble cast and Joss Whedon's writing.

Even Serenity (which HAD the original cast) was vaguely disappointing. It felt like Joss was thinking, "Okay, I have 90 minutes to explain everything I was going to reveal over the course of several seasons worth of episodes. I better jam a lot of stuff in there." It just seemed rushed compared to the series.

And of course, now that Serenity has happened, certain of the characters can't be part of a continuing story (not to spoil it if you haven't seen it) and that would leave a big hole in any future show.

Maybe if Joss did a show about the system-wide political fallout after events in Serenity become know across the cortex? That could work, actually....

Thanks for the reply! I do believe since it's fiction that they could *fix* it so some of members may return for a future episode/dvd/whatever. I do feel your right on Serenity, even though I still liked it. If they did continue the story, it could be with a new crew with the others retiring or something, but it's a wait and see type of thing. Perhaps they will pull off the synergy once again, who knows. As time goes on it becomes less and less likely that any continuation of the main cast will happen.

I also watched it all in a single sitting. I intended to watch one episode after being told a lot about it, and one obviously turned into two, three...

I had to wait until I got some sleep before I watched Serenity. There were problems with the movie, but I don't fault them for that. The girl (Moon?) had a storyline/character-arc that clearly needed a few seasons to develop. With the show being canceled, they had to force the arc of the character (and the whole show) into one movie. So, taking things into consideration, I thought they did a good job.

I was also told that playing them out of sequence was no accident. Some studio head thought that it would be better to start with the most action packed episodes to get people hooked. Clearly not the right decision. I saw them in the correct order, but knowing this ahead of time. I couldn't imagine not seeing them in order... well I could imagine, but you know what I mean.
