Buying a Domain from a Reseller? Save Thousands of Dollars!

By

About

If there is one thing I know on this planet, and know it well, is buying and selling domain names. I started purchasing them in the late 1990's for personal websites, and eventually found that they could be resold for a lot of money, even if you have nothing on the website itself. What resellers are looking for are prime, short and sweet, domain names that are both catchy and possibly great for their keyword value, which also helps you rank higher in search engine results.

Why are they looking for those types of domain names? It's for the very same reason that you are. If they get a domain name that is ripe, they know that they can sell it for thousands of dollars, to even millions of dollars, just for a simple domain name that costs them pennies per year to hold on to.

Buying? How to Knock off Thousands of Dollars

There are many resellers out there that buy a rather large amount of domain names, and they do this so they can get a package deal concerning hosting a large amount of domains with a single registrar, as well as for the purpose of acting like an online retail store where they can supple customers (the people who want to buy a domain name) with plenty of options.

The thing is, is that if you email them and ask them how much they are willing to sell, they will give you the highest price that they think that they can sell it to you for. You must haggle, unless you don't mind spending whatever it is that they are asking for.

Learn to Haggle

If you look at the email to the right (they didn't include a non-disclosure, but still I'm taking the liberty of hiding certain details), it shows you that I just went from the asking price of $2,300 to $200 in less than 15 minutes. I just saved myself a couple thousand dollars.

This is happening all the time, so when you ask for how much they are willing to sell a domain for, be sure to haggle it a bit. Tell them that you don't have that much, or that you'll think about it for a while. If you tell them that you'll think about it for a while they know that your personal drive to purchase a domain may diminish, and they don't want that. Aside from that, they may believe that you are also looking elsewhere for other domains, and they don't want to lose you as a customer!

Final Thoughts

This article is relatively short, but at the same time it may have just saved you thousands of dollars if your buying a domain name. Just remember, when you first ask for how much they are selling the domain name for, remember to haggle a bit afterwords to get the price knocked down a bit. In lots of cases, the resellers are just trying to make any sort of profit. It doesn't matter how little, or how large the profit is, just as long as it's a profit (for normal domains, not top picks).
