Social News Websites: Top 5 Social News Sites To Help You Get Noticed!

By

For the past decade this has been a very popular method for would-be article publishers to get noticed, without much of an advertising headache! The social news websites were created for readers to rank a page, which is usually ranked up or down, so that it will get noticed if it's good enough. Think of it as a human content filter, where humans (you) let others know if an article, image, or video, would be interesting to see or read.

Digg

This is probably the most well-known social news website on the internet. It was created by Kevin Rose who used to be an anchor on TechTV. Digg has been in the international news for quite some time, and is also widely popular all over the world. It features several different categories, so that no matter the article or whatever that you have, it will find a nice home here. This would probably be the best method for getting a lot of traffic, unfortunately you'll have to compete against a lot of other similar content which can be quite rough for some people. Usually it takes something unique, rare, or very funny to get high enough on there to get noticed.

Reddit

This is a very popular social news site with a relatively large following. It covers a wide range of topics, and also includes sections (subreddits) which focus on smaller niche topics, such as politics and business. This site has been pretty popular, and although I wouldn't necessarily rank this right behind Digg, it does perform rather well if your looking to get noticed on the internet. I highly recommend giving this one a try if you haven't yet.

Propeller

It's previously known as Netscape.com, is a social news aggregator operated by AOL-Netscape. It is similar to that of Digg, where the website users vote on articles, and if popular enough they will make the front page. Although, unlike Digg where the bulk of the front page material is user voted, Propeller uses a hybrid between user voted content as well as content brought to the front page by it's staff.

Fark

This website is quite popular, and is in the top 100 english websites. It boasts over four million unique visitors per month. Articles are submitted by it's user base (they are known as Farkers), which the moderators of the website approve for either the main page, or one of the niche subsidiary tab pages. This has been quite popular among radio stations and late night talk shows. If you can get a popular article in there, and it's popular enough to get on a late night talk show, you'll get a huge amount of hits!

Slashdot

They often label themselves as "News for Nerds. Stuff that Matters", which focuses on a variety of science and technology related topics, as well as gaming news. Slashdot's traffic is estimated at approximately 5.5 million users per month, which sometimes a popular article on there can drive a huge amount of traffic to independent websites. This is also known as the "Slashdot Effect".

Some important websites you have mentioned here. You missed SU or didn't intentionally put it here? Or does it not qualify as a social news website? Anyways I have had some success with SU and never had anything featured on Digg despite regular submissions.

Most likely this list will keep on expanding! So if I didn't list anything, it will be listed eventually. Digg is sometimes a hard one, since it's widely believed that there is this 'group' on there that has a monopoly on the front page.
